The Convergence Project Featuring Wanda Houston
Eugene Uman, Director at the Vermont Jazz Center, brings his ensemble to Chandler to perform original jazz compositions, with an edge of rock and the inspiration of Colombian folkloric rhythms.
The Convergence Project was put
together by Eugene Uman to interpret his own compositions, many of which were inspired by his years living in Colombia, South America. "The intention when writing
these pieces was to combine the vocabulary of jazz and swing with the edge of rock and the
inspiration of Colombian folkloric rhythms, such as pasillo, cumbia and currulao” says Uman.
During his 27 year tenure at Vermont Jazz Center Uman has produced over three hundred concerts and overseen educational programming. Uman has written over 150 jazz compositions that have been arranged for various musical ensembles ranging from big band to world music ensembles to rock.
This special performance features vocalist Wanda Houston, whose storied career has featured world tours as a singer as well as acting on Broadway and in films. She has shared the stage with Oleta Adams, Patti Austin, Eartha Kitt, Liza Minelli, Pattie Labelle, Joe Cocker, Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand. Houston has a penchant for singing soul and gospel music, as well as jazz with authenticity and passion.
