It's 1959, and rock 'n' roll superstar Conrad Birdie is about to be drafted into the Army, leaving millions of teenage fans heartbroken across America. Struggling songwriter Albert Peterson sees this as his one last chance to make it big before his meal ticket disappears. His plan? Have Conrad give "One Last Kiss" to a lucky fan on The Ed Sullivan Show, creating the publicity stunt of the decade.

The chosen girl is Kim MacAfee, a typical teenager from Sweet Apple, Ohio, whose quiet hometown is about to be turned upside down. But when Conrad arrives with his massive ego, Kim's jealous boyfriend Hugo threatens to derail everything, Albert's overbearing mother meddles at every turn, and Albert's long-suffering secretary Rose finally demands he choose between show business and their future together.
